Greek oregano (Origanum vulgare var. hirtum) is a subspecies of common oregano with a much stronger flavor and fragrance. Adorned with beautiful white flowers, Greek oregano is said to have been invented by the Greek goddess of love, Aphrodite herself! This myth gave rise to the Greek tradition of crowning newlywed couples with wreaths made from the herb. The term "oregano" can be loosely translated from Greek as "joy of the mountains," an apt name for a plant found in the natural rocky habitat of its native land. Over the centuries, the culinary and medicinal use of oregano spread from Europe to China via the "Spice Route" before reaching the New World thanks to American soldiers who discovered it during the Italian Campaign.
