Ocimum tenuiflorum (also Ocimum sanctum), commonly known as holy basil or tulsi, is an aromatic perennial plant native to the Indian subcontinent. It is grown throughout Southeast Asia for religious and traditional medicinal purposes, such as herbal teas in Ayurveda. The leaves are also used in the worship of Vishnu, while the plant is considered to provide protection for the home. Tulsi is also known in Southeast Asian cuisine, and during the hot summer months you can find it in large quantities in the markets.
